I'm trying to do work again. Being at my parents' generally reduces my work ethic to naught, so it's been hard getting back into it. That and the last quarter burnt me the hell out.

I see a lot of movies 2009 Great Movies
10 C'est pas moi, je le jure! - Lovely period comedy about a suicidal boy in 70s suburban Quebec. Gorgeous tartans and pastels. 10 Fantastic Mr Fox - Great children's story with values I approve. 10 Hurt Locker - Fascinating psychological piece about a bomb squad. 10 In The Loop - Great political satire about incompetence and ass-covering causing war. 10 Where the Wild Things Are - Immersive psychological piece about family and frustration. 9 Inglourious Basterds - Very different from the trailer. Story of an opportunistic gestapo chap and the resistance in France. 9 Mary and Max - Touching, funny stop-motion about penpals. Contains death and attempted suicide. Gets a bit slow towards the end. 9 Up - Touching intro. Great movie about boys. Needs more girls. The bird is weird. 9 Young Victoria - Fascinating period piece about Victoria's rise to power and her choices.
Interesting Failures
8 Adventureland - Fascinating comedy about virginal grad students working at an amusement park. I found myself very much identifying with the main characters. 8 Coraline - Children's horror movie. 8 District 9 - Straightforward actioner. Apartheid part of the setting, but no statement is made about it. 8 Observe and Report - Intense portrayal of a mall cop descending into absolute insanity. Twisted. 8 Ponyo - Beautiful children's movie about 8 Serious Man - Existentialist angst. I'm a sucker for 70s fashion. 7 Avatar - Beautiful. Wonderful world-building. White man mastering indigenous culture and becoming better than the natives at native stuff a bit cliche. 7 Brothers Bloom - Absurdist caper piece. No pretense at realism. 7 Duplicity - Fun caper piece. 7 Fired Up - Bring It On but with male leads. Very sharp camerawork. Smart script. Needs serious non-whites to balance out the comedic non-whites. 7 Hangover - Funny. 7 I Love You, Beth Cooper - Fun coming of age comedy. 7 Up in the Air - Interesting psychological piece. A bit empty, but this is necessitated by the character being portrayed. 7 Watchmen - Superhero story. A bit long. 7 Zombieland - Fun adventure. I hate Bill Murray. Distressed damsels in last act contrary to sense, prior plot.
Entertaining
6 Away We Go - Interesting but pointless travelogue. 6 Big River Man - Fascinating portrayal of crazy Slovenian guy that swims the length of the Amazon. A bit long. 6 Funny People - Socially conservative movie is socially conservative. 6 G-Force - I like hamster super agents. Sue me. 6 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Why did the 3D only last the first 15 minutes? 6 I Love You Man - Funny. Jason Segel can do better. 6 Men Who Stare at Goats - Like the trailer, but with pointless filler added. 6 Monsters vs Aliens - I liked it a lot, but it was the first movie I've watched in 3D. 6 Star Trek - Fun 6 Twilight II: Twilight Harder - No vampirism until marriage makes zero sense. 6 Whip It - Amiable but pointless. 5 He's Just Not That Into You - Eh. 5 The Proposal - Great chemistry between the leads. Lousy supporting cast. 5 Race to Witch Mountain - I like Dwayne Johnson. 5 Sherlock Holmes - Watson is great. London is interestingly dirty. Movie is full of fingers hanging off cliffs, split-second escapes, and other dumb cliches. Not enough flirting between Holmes and Watson. No sexytime with Rachel MacAdams. Plot about magical satanists dumb and boring.
Tedious
4 500 Days of Summer - Wah wah wah. I am a dumb boy and I will blame everything on the ex. It's all her fault. Wah wah wah. 4 Anvil! The Story of Anvil - Slow and boring. 4 Flammen & Citronen - Slow and boring. 4 Great Buck Howard - Slow and boring. 4 Public Enemies - If you start off in gritty camcorder, don't end in pretentious slow motion. 3 Fanboys - Uh, the token female dresses up as Slave Leia in the last shot. Otherwise, no redeeming characteristics. 3 Princess and the Frog - Disney is incredibly irritating. No, pretending to like your family is not as important as leading your own life, assholes. Having people break character to make such statements is incredibly annoying. Disregarding the annoying bits, the movie is just tedious.
Someone Just Shat on My Face
1 17 Again - Contrived and embarassing. 1 The International - Boring injected with dull drowned in pointless. 1 Ugly Truth - The writing was so bad I walked out and demanded my money back. They gave it to me. 1 X-Men: Origins: Wolverine - The action was paltry and uninspired. Everything else was worse.

So 4K sector drives are coming, but are they safe? Journaling in recent filesystems should prevent data corruption during powerfail, and it seems to work with 512b sector drives these days. Now... of course 4K can emulate 512b sectors using RMW cycle in common case, but can they also provide some guarantees over powerfail? 3.5KB of junk scribbled to adjacent partition would be pretty bad news.
Now... I do not think 512b sector drives "officially" provide any guarantees on powerfail behaviour; but they seem to behave sanely. That's good more reason to avoid 4K drives: I suspect the answer will be "we never guaranteed anything during powerfail".

Tiny helicopter I got tiny helicopter as a present. It is IR-controlled, coaxial type, about 10 cm total, and pretty sturdy -- which is good because so far it survived. Question is, how do I learn to fly it? I found some instructions on the web, but they are for much bigger models, featuring stuff like Cyclic control and Collective pitch... which this beast simply does not have.
Two main rotors and one tail one, pointing upwards (!) is all I have. Dumb question #1: is it possible that rudder trim needs different settings while hovering just about ground and while flying?

James Bond Films.
YAFGC update. Join the Forum! *-*
So we watched 2 James Bond movies over the last couple of evenings. The last Pierce Brosnan film, "Die Another Day" and the latest Daniel Craig film "Quantum of Solace".
My expectations were: "Quantum of Solace" - Not as good as "Casino Royale" but still better than anything since Roger Moore took over the role. "Die Another Day" - Horrible mockery of the James Bond films, bad acting, bad superman-esque OTT action and horrific drippy chemistry-lacking sex scene schlock with overworked formula.
What I experienced was: "Quantum of Solace" - WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? Nonsense action which couldn't be followed. Crappy overcutting, no sense of direction of action, swooping, swinging constant nauseating camera movement and totally inept half-assed story that made no sense. HATED HATED HATED. Worse than "The World is Not Enough" (And I -really- hated that one).
"Die Another Day" - (perhaps because we saw it AFTER QoS) Refreshingly Bond-esque. John Cleese had finally fit his role as Q and become a fitting successor to Llewelyn. Halle Berry was absolutely awful, but in the context of the rest of the movie she was tolerable. We felt like we'd watched a James Bond movie after this one in a way that QoS left us flat.
But I'd also always been a Pierce Brosnan Bond supporter. It was the scripts that sucked. I still think he's a good fit for the part.

Stuff I love Christmas. All around the neighborhood, people are are briefly stepping out of the hustle and bustle of their daily lives to spend time with their families and enjoy a bit of old-fashioned holiday cheer.
And with fewer people using bandwidth, my Internet connection goes extra fast.

Stuff So, last night I was at a party with a bunch of my friends. It went on really long, and by the end it was too late to safely walk home, so the guy whose house it was at kindly offered to let us all spend the night. I curled up into a corner to sleep, and this really pretty girl I'd been talking to earlier came over and lay down practically on top of me.
"Um," I said.
She didn't say anything, but she grabbed me and kissed me. We kissed for a while, and then she told me how much she loved me. "Wow," I said, "this is all like I'm dreaming or something."
"You are," she told me.
Then I woke up.
My unconscious has a weird sense of humor.
