As I write this, I'd rather be writing fan-fics at work than the numerous end-of-year reports with tight deadlines that I'm currently doing.

(No, I'm not writing this at work.)

Gravity Wells
This doesn't take into account the energy imparted by orbital motion (or gravity assists or the Oberth effect), all of which can make it easier to reach outer planets.

That sound you don't hear is the sound of Terry quailing in horror.

"Quailing" is a good verb. People should use it more often.

It's always a pain using different fonts in this comic, because the default font I chose is very legible at the quite small default type size, and almost without exception any fancier font I want to use needs to be made larger just so you can read it. Which eats up a lot of the dialogue space.

If you weren't aware, by the way, technically a font refers to a particular size and style of typeface, a typeface being the entire collection of sizes and styles. So "Arial, 10 point, Roman" or "Arial, 12 point, italic" are fonts, whereas "Arial" is a typeface. Not that anyone cares much about the distinction any more except for typographical enthusiasts.

I thought for sure there'd be an entry on TV Tropes about this trope: The ethnic (or space ethnic) character who, all common wisdom to the contrary, insists that some cultural icon is actually a native of their own culture. There are a couple of examples from Star Trek alone:

  • Chekov, who insists variously that Scotch whisky, the Cheshire Cat, Cinderella, and the Garden of Eden are all Russian.
  • General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, who says that Shakespeare is best appreciated in the original Klingon.
But search as I might, I couldn't find a trope for this. (Of course now I expect there to be a proposal to create one within a few minutes of this comic going live...)

If you're turning 27 and were born in the Northeast, maybe you were conceived in the blizzard of 1982. Imagine: snowed in, candles, massage oil, your mom sporting nothing but her early 80's haircut and a smile ... aren't you glad you read the title-text?

It's the traditional Christmas Eve comic again! As usual, I wish you all the best or, if you're not into the whole Christmas thing, at least you might get some fun out of this version of the song "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!"

Booths are cool. Not many places where I live have them, but one local Mexican restaurant does, and we always request a booth when going there to eat, rather than a standard dining table.

The citadel is a photo of the Sikh temple of Harmandar Sahib (commonly known as the Golden Temple) in Amritsar, India. Not having visited there myself ( though I'd love to one day), I used a Creative Commons image by Koshyk. I've pasted it into a background image taken by myself on Lord Howe Island.

I remember the first time I tried frozen yoghurt. It was amazing - new and exciting and all tangy and yummy in ways in which ice cream couldn't duplicate. I was hooked.

I had frozen yoghurt quite a lot soon thereafter. But over time the novelty wore off and I must admit that I haven't actually had any frozen yoghurt for several years now. Maybe I should go pick some up.

James Bond films are well known for using glamorous locations for filming otherwise mundane scenes.

The film location used in the movie is the Basilica Cistern, which was indeed constructed by the Emperor Constantine 1600 years ago, although it was significantly altered and enlarged by Justinian a couple of hundred years later. It's a cathedral-sized underground space, filled with columns carved in intricate designs and a beautiful vaulted ceiling.

So it's actually a bit more than a mere sewer.

My dictionary provides:

suffer, v.i. 1. to undergo or feel pain or distress. 2. to sustain injury, disadvantage, or loss. 3. to undergo a penalty, esp. of death. 4. to be the object of some action. 5. to endure patiently or bravely. -v.t. 6. to undergo, experience, or be subjected to (pain, distress, injury, loss, or anything unpleasant). 7. to undergo (any action, process, etc.): to suffer change. 8. to tolerate or allow. 9. to allow or permit (to be or do as stated).
If you don't know how to read a dictionary, allow me to digress slightly to explain what that v.i. and v.t. mean. "Suffer" is a verb, which is what the v. stands for in each case. The i. stands for intransitive, and the t. stands for transitive.

An intransitive verb is one which doesn't need an object. My favourite example verb is intransitive: run. Using it in a sentence: "I run." I don't run something, I just run.

A transitive verb is one which needs an object. A good transitive verb is break. Using it in a sentence: "I break the computer." I can't just break, I have to break something.

Clever readers will no doubt spot that there are also transitive meanings for "run" ("I run the computer.") and, if you change the subject and tense, intransitive meanings for "break" ("The computer broke."). There aren't all that many verbs in English that are exclusively transitive or intransitive - most do double service in different contexts.

Anyway, "suffer" is one of those verbs that can go either way. The more usual version comes first in the definition. In this case, it's intransitive: "I suffer." I don't need to suffer anything specific, I can just suffer (though frankly I'd prefer not to!).

There are also some common transitive uses, in which the object is what I'm suffering. "I suffer pain."

Then there are meanings which aren't in such common use these days, like what our ghost says in the comic. "The dead do not suffer the living to pass." So... "the dead do not suffer the living"... The correct meaning here is number 9: "The dead do not allow the living to pass." So this memorable line from The Return of the King is not about suffering in the sense of suffering pain or anything like that. The ghost is merely saying that he won't let the living dudes go past.

And the response, "You will suffer me!" is now easily interpretable as meaning: "You will allow me!"

Which sort of kills my joke in the comic, but it was worth it for imparting this knowledge to anyone who wasn't aware of it.

He obviously hasn't thought about it long enough.

Don't think about it too hard yourself. It is slightly disturbing, but I'm afraid this sort of thing is virtually inevitable if you start mucking about with time machines.

I originally wrote this without Jane saying anything in the first panel. During assembly I realised there was space and decided to add something from Jane that would be cut off by the phone ringing. The good thing is I don't need to know what it was she was saying, because it got cut off.
